Hanging Wet Bag

I finally made a wet bag to use for "used" cloth diapers. I have been 1/2 time cloth diapering for almost two years. I have always used a plastic grocery sack and hung it in the closet. It really works well, just not that pretty...

Today while watching the Cyclones beat KU I made one. I followed this tutorial http://www.lemonsqueezyhome.com/2010/05/wetbag-tutorial.html, but modified the dimensions to be 17"x20".

The zipper is a little wonky. It works but not as pretty as I would want it if I gave it to a friend. Much prettier than a Fareway sack hanging in the closet!

Mother's Day

I made this for my Mother, for Mother's Day. I embroidered the kids hands on fabric. The picture is not the greatest. At the top of the hoop it says 2011. It is meant to be homey, and hang on the wall in the hoop.

Easter outfits

I sewed during nap time for about a week. Not bad for a beginning seamstress. I took two trips to Joann's, and $22.00 (including Dallas $5 polo) The girls dresses were made using this tutorial. I found it easy to work with, I did have to make up Noelle's as the pattern did not size that small. I had to make three bodices before one fit, and it was still a little wonky in the back. But Noelle is not one size all over, she has a lot of chub in the trunk area! Dallas bow tie was made using this tutorial. It was very fast and easy. I would do more in a heartbeat. He hated putting it on, but once on I think he simple forgot about it, as he wore it 12 + hours that day and didn't seem to mind. His hat made using this tutorial. I found the directions not to be as clear as I hoped, actually I wanted more pictures. I am a visual learner, and love online tutorials for this reason, step by step pictures, thank you bloggers! I did modify the hat to take some poof out of it, and to make it fit. Original size it was too small, when I de-poofed it was really big. I added some elastic, which helped the fit, and hopefully made it comfortable to wear.
And the flower bow in Emily's hair, is based on some I have seen, I am sure there is a tute out there, but I didn't use one directly. It is an assembly of 6 or so circles, the top four circles folded into quarters and placed on the other flat circles. I sewed the whole thing together and then onto an aligator clip.

My little girl (and boy) put holes in all of their jeans at the wrong time of year! There are no jeans in the stores right now, and Spring or Summer has yet to arrive, although the calendar says otherwise. We have a no-holey jeans are worn out rule, so I needed to help the jeans so they would have something to wear!

I received this pattern Christmas 2009, along with some lovely Amy Butler fabric from the Midwest Modern line. I love all Amy Butler fabric, if only it was a little cheaper.

It was a perfect gift, as I love to sew. It is hard for me to get projects done that take longer than naptime. Fast-forward two years, and I completed it. This was my first sewn piece from a pattern using that thin tiny brown paper, and directions! I am a visual learner, so the advent of bloggers putting patterns and pictures on their websites sure does help, and helps me build confidence. This pattern was my first time tackling pleat.

I like it, I skipped the towel loop on the waistband, as I didn't see using that much. I wish it was shorter, I must have misread the sizing on that part of the pattern! Now I need to get cooking in the kitchen!

Clip and Bow holder

Another in house craft. Used scrap fabric and ribbon, and a glassless frame I bought last year at a garage sale for $0.25. Emily likes it and does use it. She can get the clips on and off. It is sturdier that I thought, as her little brother has a tendency to just rip them off instead of unclasping them. Now to just find a spot to hang it, as it is it floats around the room. I try to think of it as a very cheery piece of art.

I took the backboard out of the frame and covered it in fabric, using my hot glue gun. I then attached three pieces of ribbon, gluing the ribbon onto the back of the board only. Snap the board back into the frame and you are done!

Decorating the nursery

I whipped up this little flag bunting while my husband was on his latest trip. I don't know why I always end up crafting or painting a room while he is gone, I should sleep extra instead! The nursery was first decorated 5 years ago, I liked it then... I never got around to personalising it for either kid. I guess I found it was time. I was over the "little bear" decor. I love the cheeriness this adds to the room. I feel like this is a more updated "name on the wall" project than the wooden letters seen everywhere.

Scrap fabric and blanket binding made this project come together easily in one evening. The one issue I had was my poor, not sharp hand-me-down pinking shears.

How to hem jeans

I have used this tutorial twice now, and love the results. I think I like it so much because it keeps the original jean hem, which I feel keeps it feeling like 'cool jeans. It doesn't look like I have hemmed them. I do recomend lying them flat to dry or hanging them to keep the cuff turned inside, but this is not a problem for me since I normally do not dry my jeans in the dryer, I would rather dry them flat than iron.
Next time you see me take notice of my cuffs and see if you can tell that there hemmed!

Shaped Frozen Yogurt

We found this idea in this months Zoo magazine.

Find a cookie cutter you want to use, place it on top of waxed paper or plastic wrap, and then on a plate or cookie sheet (something that will fit into your freezer). Have your kiddo fill yogurt into the cutter.

After freezing for a couple of hours unmold, if you have issues, run the sides under warm water really quick, we didn't have any problems though.

Enjoy, we topped with a couple of heart shaped sprinkles also!

You could use about any combo, I think key lime yogurt and a dinosaur cutter would be awesome.

I thought I would share my recent love for these silicon Wilton muffin cups. I received these for Christmas several years ago, and frankly I didn't use them. I broke them out last year when I had extra muffin mix and already had filled my one muffin pan. I used these stand alone on a cookie sheet and they worked perfectly. I have started using them regularly as liners in my muffin pan. They are so easy, I spray them with a little cooking spray, and the muffins fall right out. They clean up in the dishwasher or with a little Dawn. They are also fun to fill with snacks for the kiddos, think bento box fun. And they are green!

making the duck

My daughter wanted to be a duck for Halloween. I have no idea why, but it stuck. I tried to convince her otherwise, as I didn't know how I was going to create a duck. Most of the duck patterns I saw were for infants, and seemed a little beyond my sewing prowless. Having a homemade costume is important to me, my mother always made my costumes growing up. I have fond memories of going to walmart or the big fabric store in the big city to look through the pattern books. I have never had a little plastic fabric from k-mart and hopefully I can always cater to my kiddo's in that way.

I took one of her shift style jean jumpers and used that as pattern for the main body of the duck. I made the neck and arm openings a little bigger as I didn't want to worry about putting in a zipper and to account for Halloween in Iowa (lots of layers under costumes). I add a little flutter sleeve to mimic a wing. I took a 20 in strip of fabric, gathered it into a ruffle and sewed it into the arm hole. To add more volume to the "wing look" I crafted little tutu's to the size of her upper arm. These were not attached to the dress, but more like bracelet's. I also took additional tulle, bunched it up, sewed a big puffy portion together and attached it to the back of the dress to act as the ducks tail. I added a little tulle flower I made to a clip for her hair. The legs needed to be orange. I used orange kool-aid (an all-natural dye+ much cheaper than RIT) to make a pair of old white tights orange. The last detail the hubby helped with. We took a sheet of crafting foam, he traced some duck feet onto the foam. I cut the feet out, punched a couple of holes into the feet and secured with elastic to cover up her shoes. It worked wonderfully. The bill of the duck was a 0.97$ foam visor from the craft store, unfortunally they did not have one in orange. I bought a red one and covered it in orange felt. I think the whole costume ran about $7.00.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar birthday

On Oct 8th you can Read for the Record. Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar to help set a world record. Did you know The VHC is celebrating it's 40 birthday all year long. We helped our little fan with her third birthday in theme as well.
The invites were made by us. Ink and thumbprints made the caterpillar. We put a hole punch through the cake, and had the detail info on the back, along with a sticker of a butterfly.

A craft, we had all the kids participate. Eric Carle actually used collage to create the artwork in the VHC. We took a spin on that idea. We provided paper plates, glue and lots of cut up tissue paper for each kiddo to make a body segment for the caterpillar. I made the face. We also made caterpillars into butterfly's. Coffee filter, clothes pin butterflies. I had prepped the clothes pins with googly eyes and antenna, my husband hid them in the grass. The kiddos had to search for a clothes pin caterpillar. They then brought it to the table to get a coffee filter and decorated the wings with markers. We attached magnets to the back of the clothes pin so it could be displayed on the fridge. We also read the book! We happen to own three versions, two board books, big and small and a wonderful pop-up (which we read). I also checked out two puppets from our local library, one a caterpiller and one a butterfly. Don't forget your librarians, they are wonderful resources.

Walmart spray paint $0.89 where have you been all my life? After replacing our front door, I decided to keep sprucing. Why it never occured to me to just clean the glass in the light fixtures four years ago when we moved in I will never know!

Fabric covered knob pulls

When creating a big girl room for our daughter, I picked up a dresser and vanity from craigslist. I painted them bright white, the existing hardware was not the whimsical, fun look I was looking for. I searched high and low for fun pulls, but eek, I was not about to pay $9/knob for hand painted flower knobs! I needed 13 total.

This idea came to me, and it is so easy

Items needed:

Mod Podge

Fabric of choice, I chose a small pattern that I didn't have to worry about centering (1/8 yard was enough for 13)

Rubber band

Unfinished wood hardware (I found mine at Walmart, a pack of 8 was a little over $8.00)

Coat your knob with Mod Podge

Take your fabric, I cut mine 3.5" square, and place on the knob.

Wrap the fabric around the knob, smoothing as you go, and gathering around the base.

Coat with Mod Podge again, over top the fabric

Secure with the fabric with a rubber band around the base. It will get sticky with the Mod Podge. After it dries you can cut or remove the rubber band. Trim the fabric at the base of the knob. I coated my knobs a second time to make them shiny and durable.

Attach the knob, and you're finished!

Grilled Pizza

We love pizza, my daughter requests to eat it daily. This pizza was and end of the month/budget use what is in the house creation. It is really good with chicken and fresh veggies too.
I use this for my dough recipe. Heat grill to 400 F. To grill the pizza, I clean the grill well, ie scrape all of the little bits from the surface from the last time we grilled. I rub an onion half over top of the grate ( I heard somewhere that it will help the dough from sticking.) I have the pizza all shaped, on a flat pan and then slide it onto the grill. I don't use a pan underneath. Let the pizza crust cook for 4-5 minutes, with the lid closed and then flip it over and add all of your ingredients. It is best to have all of them ready, outside next to your grill. I usually take a cookie sheet and have everything ready in bowls to quickly add. Once your crust is topped close your grill lid and cook another 5 minutes or so.
The above pizza has tomato sauce that I spiced up with some garlic salt and Italian seasoning, browned hamburger meat with onion and Monterrey jack cheese, not exactly our ideal pizza but like I said we were using up stuff from the pantry! Grilled pizza is a great way to keep your house cool in the summer, no oven. Don't be scared of the pizza dough falling through your grill grate, we have a Webber grill and it has never happened to us, and we have been grilling pizza for a couple of years.

another summer treat

I bought some Popsicle holders at the store the other day. I missed buying them last year, they seem to be a seasonally only item. I mixed up a batch of our usual strawberry protein shakes and decided to freeze them as pops. My shake recipe is pretty easy and you can sub just about any component.

1 scoop of vanilla protein powder

ice

sliced strawberries

vanilla yogurt

water or milk

Mix in the blender, and pour into the molds. I did find that you might have to let the shake settle, as the blender adds lots of air into the mix, which doesn't freeze very well in the molds. They taste delish!

Gift and more bandana love

I made this "hooter hider" or nursing cover for a friend. She saw mine, and I offered to make one for her as a gift. She picked the fabric and I love it. Brown is so in right now, and they are going to be surprised in the delivery room so it works well. Plus I think the cover up is for the mom, not the kid so do what you want! Since she paid for the fabric, I wanted to buy so it would truly be a gift, but she beat me to it, I decided to throw in three burp clothes. These have been over done in the craft world, but everyone needs them and it is super simple to sew an accent onto a cloth diaper.

And this skirt is due to the fact that I discovered Walmart has a bandanna section. They happen to be 89 cents less than the ones at JoAnns and they seem to be softer. This blue was just the right color. I used fabric I already had to trim. I love fabric, but I need to finish projects and use stuff I have on hand before purchasing more, although that didn't stop me from picking up another $1.00 bandanna....

Up and Up

Have you guys noticed the new marketing effort Target has put forward. Target diapers are now Up and Up, as are wipes and a slew of other home products that had a previous labeled Target brand. I like to buy generic diapers if they work. In my ideal world I like to coupon enough so I can get the diapers under $0.16/diaper. I used to always get White Cloud diapers from Walmart, that line was discontinued, although Parents Choice brand is still available. They seem comparable, so I recently purchased Parents Choice.
I still have to run to Target for their wipes, Walmart wipes don't pop up, and honestly if I am going to pay for disposable wipes what is the point if they don't pop up, so Target wipes it is.
While I was there I picked up a pack of the Up and Up to give them a try. I think they are pretty cute, no silly animal or character on them just big pastel blue and green dots. I am a fan of that simple design, but then I don't buy my kid Dora shirts either. The one disappointment is they package 10 diapers per each size. I know some people don't notice less diapers per package, they just check the price. All in all them seem to work well. Although I wish we were just using the potty full time instead...

Summer Treat, Monkey Tails

This is one of my favorite summer treats. I think you could say it is pretty healthy as well.

I grew up calling them Monkey Tails.

Recipe is as follows

Banana's

Chocolate chips

Popsicle sticks ( I used wooden skewer cut in half today as I did not halve Popsicle sticks)

Pretty self explanatory. Cut the banana in half, place the stick in one end. Freeze 1 hour. Melt chocolate, dip banana in chocolate, freeze. I bet they would be good for a week or two in the freezer, they don't stay around that long in this house!

A peek inside the dresser

I did this a while back, but thought it was share worthy. When my daughter moved into her room, I grabbed the furniture from craigslist. I painted it white added some fun pulls (more on that to come), and decided to line it. Since the dresser and vanity were used I wanted to line the drawers, I think it warranted something a little more substantial and fun than contact paper. Scented paper was a little spendy and not readily available in my town. I ended up using fabric.

This fabric was found in the sale section at JoAnn's I think it was $2/yd, I grabbed two yards for four drawers. This is also a cotton with a little stretch to it, but I don't think that is necessary.

I took a large piece of cardboard, placed the drawer on top of the cardboard and traced around the drawer. Use an exacto knife to cut out your cardboard, you can keep to the inside of the line traced as you want it to fit inside your drawer.

Cover the cardboard in glue (I used plain crafters glue, but I think this would be a great place to use spray glue). Place the cardboard on top of your fabric. Cut the fabric to size leaving enough to fold over the edges.

Fold over the edges, nothing fancy as you can see here. I was pretending I was upholstering a seat, so I would keep the top side nice looking.

Once your fabric is glued on, insert it into the drawer. It should fit snugly. Here is the top drawer with all of those lovely hair accessories!

Korean Beef

This is yummy! I started with the original recipe, Sara Moulton from Food Network.

the marinade:

1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup rice vinegar
3 scallions, white and 2 inches of the green parts, finely chopped, plus additional chopped scallions for garnish
2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar
1 (2-inch) piece fresh ginger, finely chopped
1 1/2 tablespoons Asian toasted sesame oil
2 teaspoons hot red pepper flakes
1 1/2 pounds skirt steak

- I used less soy sauce, maybe 1/4 cup, subbed salad vinegar for rice vinegar, powdered ginger since I didn't have fresh. I sliced up the steak and combined all for 24 hours. I stir fried in my wok, steamed veggies and served with brown rice. Really yummy.

sewing projects

I started with the bandana skirt, Vanessa does things I could only dream of, and I only have two kiddos hanging around my feet! While I was in the bandana mood I found this tutorial and had to try it out as well. I think these simple projects have really helped my self esteem in the sewing department. I love using online tutorials, it is like having a cookbook with pictures! I just might be getting enough confidence to break out some the the vintage toddler dress patterns I have inherited.

Hot Pink dress ready for summer

This shirt and skirt combo will be gifted this week. What three year old girl won't be thrilled with a Dora shirt and skirt.

For the shirt, I cut out Dora, Boots and the little star, and used fusible web to place them on the t-shirt. The skirt, is crafted using the same basic principles as the bandana skirt. I cut fabric the size of half a bandana and went from there. The only change I made was adding an accent piece of fabric at the waist as well as the hem.

Vacuum review, Part 2

-Loved the attachment for upholstery, picked up hair off of the furniture really well

-Doesn't get up to the edge of the wall or furniture

-Using the attachments was difficult, it seems like there is almost to much suction, it is hard to keep the attachment hose stretched because it is being sucked in.

-I have to use the attachments on the stairs, my bissel is small enough I can vacuum the stairs

-Head of the vacuum is to tall to fit under much of my furniture, my bissel could scoot under furniture and cabinets

Vacuum review, Part 1

I need/want a new vacuum. I have a Lab who sheds (we love him) , and a busy family that goes in and out although we always take off our shoes. I am not strict with eating snacks in the living room and our dining room is also carpeted, so I do need to vacuum daily.
*this post might get a little gross for you, hopefully I won't scare anyone into not coming over anymore!
I am currently using a 6 year old Bissel Clean View. I have been super pleased with its performance until recently. It is beyond loud, it hasn't always been, but something has changed in the last half year. I hide the kids upstairs if I am vacuuming downstairs. Once I put them in the car in the attached garage, all doors shut and it still woke up my newborn! Lately it also seems that it does its fair share of pushing the dog hair around instead of picking it up.

First order of buisness:
I want to know if the Dyson is worth the price, or could I just upgrade my Bissel to the new model or even go to the Bissel Animal model. (most everything I have read about animal versions of vacuums is it is the basic vacuum with a special attachment)

I have borrowed a friends Dyson to play with for a while...

MilkDiapers, descriptive name I know! I first found out about this product from the Pioneer Woman . (if you don't follow her, you must start this instant) I initially thought a reusable nursing pad would be disgusting, but since the Pioneer Woman raved of them, I had to give them a try.

They are really nice, so much softer than the disposable, and they don't have that crunch to them that the paper/disposable ones carry. I don't think I could have managed using these the first month after birth, but they work perfectly for me now that my body is predictable. I get by really well with a set of three, I have to do laundry constantly anyway with the two little ones around. They are really great priced, I can only imagine the money I am saving not buying the throw aways.

my new favorite breakfast

This is one of those wholesome, yummy summery recipes. We tend to eat oatmeal for breakfast quite a bit around here, but the weather finally turned and I didn't feel like a hot bowl of cereal. This recipe is modified from the Beyerly's food magazine.

Cold oats with berries

1 cup of Steel Cut Oats
1 cup of skim milk
1 cup of yogurt (plain if you like it tangy, vanilla if you want it sweet)
Combine the ingredients and place into the fridge overnight to soak. In the morning dish out 1/2 cup serving, can add more milk if you like it a little more runny. Top with berries. FYI, my husband heated this up too, and liked it enough to eat that way!

I went to a Memorial service today. The great room of the funeral home was filled with beloved family and friends. I noticed one wall was lined with walkers. My mind drifted to the tennis balls on the feet of the walker. What did they put on walkers before tennis balls became so readily available, and why have the companies that produce walkers not caught on that they should put something tennis ball like onto the walker in the first place.

Child's play Cape

I used the tutorial from puking pastilles for the cape. It is a two sided cape on one side I used the crown she created. My kiddo is not that into Superman or Batman yet, so I didn't really feel like using those emblems. We do watch some retro Sesame Street, and Super Grover came to mind. I used that idea and switched the G for her initials E. It was really simple!

Re-Invented jeans

My little one is in need of some summery clothes. I decided to see if I could a pair of her jeans that surely would not fit her by fall and make them into capris. I was inspired by this. at Poppies at Play.

I don't want to call this a tutorial, since I am sure it is not an original idea, but I will try to describe what I created in my own words!

Jeans, as you can see they are a little worn, so they are ready to be reworked.

I cut off the bottom three inches, I just guessed as my model was sleeping. I probably would have made them a little shorter if I would have measured.

Turn the jean inside out and turn up a hem, mine was 1/2". You can take the time to serge or zig-zag stitch the raw edge if you want too.

Iron the turned up edge.

Turn right side out and pin decorative trim in place. I chose this frilly eyelet. I used almost 3/4 yard for size 24 month jeans. I liked that this trim has a scallop edge as it will be a little forgiving if I don't sew it on straight. Sew trim on with a straight stitch!

I used a onsie I had, and grabbed the fabric from an old shirt. The project has cost me zero dollars so far. I am planning on stitching around the tie, but want to pick up a contrasting thread.

Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are my go to, no fail cookies. I can have the ingredients on hand at all times and can have them in the oven in ten minutes if I need too!

1 cup butter
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 package (3-1/2 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
2 eggs
2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

In a large mixing bowl, combine butter, sugars, vanilla and pudding mix; beat until smooth and creamy. Beat in eggs. Combine flour and baking soda; add gradually to pudding mixture. Stir in chocolate chips, batter will be stiff. Drop by heaping teaspoonfuls about 2 in. apart onto ungreased cookies sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 9 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on wire racks. Yield 4-1/2 dozen.
This recipe is from Country Cookies. They are sweet, so semi-sweet chips is a must, I like to use seasonal M&M's but will put 1 cup candies to 1 cup of chips.

OxyClean

I heart OxyClean, it should be on every new mothers must buy list. Nothing works better on those little newborn "whoops it spilled out of the diaper" incidents. I recently ran out of Spray and Wash, I decided to refill the existing bottle with one scoop of OxyClean and water. I have used it all week and love it.
